by Joe Costello, CNC | Green Drinks & Superfood Drinks

In this comparison article, we’re going to take an in-depth look at two of the most popular greens supplements on the market. We’ll directly compare Athletic Greens vs Amazing Grass Green Superfood to find out which greens powder is the better choice.

We’re going to break down the ingredients, supplement facts, pricing, and much more. Read on to see what we found and discover which greens powder we recommend!

What is the difference between Athletic Greens and Amazing Grass?

The difference between Athletic Greens and Amazing Grass is primarily the amount of superfoods per serving. In terms of quality and potency, Athletic Greens has Amazing Grass beat in most areas, which we’ll elaborate on below.

The problem is that Athletic Greens is almost double the price of Amazing Grass Green Superfood, so the question becomes is it really worth it? You’re paying a lot more money for a product that really isn’t that much more potent…the difference is about 3,000 milligrams of superfoods per serving.

Yes, Athletic Greens is more potent than Amazing Grass, so how come we still don’t recommend it? The answer is simple. Our top ranked best greens powder is a whopping 50% more potent than Athletic Greens, and it’s cheaper. Click here to learn more: BEST GREEN DRINK POWDERS.

Athletic Greens

1. Athletic Greens vs Amazing Grass price

At $99 for a 30-day supply, Athletic Greens is almost twice the price of Amazing Grass Green Superfood, which only costs $59.99 for a 30-day supply. The fact that Athletic Greens is the more potent supplement certainly justifies a higher price, but not this high…it’s still way overpriced. In fact, they both are.

Athletic Greens is overpriced, and Amazing Grass Green Superfood is cheap for one simple reason…it’s just not a very good superfood powder. You know what they say: you get what you pay for, and that is especially true when it comes to superfood powder supplements. The pricing issues and lack of value are part of the reason why we don’t recommend either one of these greens powders.

2. Athletic Greens or Amazing Grass for flavor?

Before we get into this, keep in mind greens supplements generally do not have very good flavor. It’s tough to make a supplement that consists of vegetables and superfoods taste good, which is why we recommend mixing your green powder in with juice or a smoothie to mask the flavor.

With that said, the Amazing Grass taste is slightly better than the Athletic Greens taste, which is likely the result of the added natural flavors designed to mask the taste of the superfood powder. But again, greens powders simply are not going to taste like chocolate. I will say that Athletic Greens actually offers a chocolate flavor, which tastes significantly better. However, as you can imagine it comes with more calories, fat, etc. which makes the chocolate flavor less desirable.

The best way to improve the taste of superfood powder supplements is to mix the greens powder in with juice or a smoothie. Here is my personal superfood drink recipe that I use every morning to make my superfood supplement taste delicious. I mix in one serving size of the greens with almond milk, bananas, and organic peanut butter. It is an absolutely delicious superfood drink recipe once you tinker with the recipe and flavors until it fits your liking.

3. Probiotics

Probiotics are a problem for Amazing Grass Green Superfood because the supplement company doesn’t disclose the dosage, which likely means they don’t include a lot of probiotics in the formula. Therefore, Athletic Greens has the advantage here by default with 7.2 billion CFU of probiotics.

However, it’s important to note that 7.2 billion CFU is really still not a lot. Some of the more elite, top-shelf greens powders on the market contain 4-5 times as many probiotics per serving. Probiotics are absolutely crucial for your gut health and therefore should not be overlooked. Probiotics have the ability to naturally improve your gut health, digestive health, and even balance out your gut microbiome.

The health benefits of probiotics are endless, but the most important one is undoubtedly the improvements probiotics can have on your gut health. And remember, your gut communicates with your brain every day, so if you can improve gut function, you can thereby improve cognitive function as a result.

4. Digestive Enzymes

Here’s where this superfood powder comparison gets a bit interesting. Amazing Grass has 3 times the amount of digestive enzymes as Athletic Greens has at 426 milligrams vs 154 milligrams, respectively.

Digestive enzymes are critically important because they help ensure your body is able to properly digest and absorb the superfoods you’re consuming…this is more commonly known as nutrient absorption. Without the digestive enzymes, some of the nutrients will go to waste.

So, some people might consider it a big deal that Athletic Greens is severely lacking in the digestive enzymes department…I am one of those people. As a Nutrition Coach, I know exactly how the digestion process works, and I know just how critical it is that your superfood powder contain enough digestive enzymes. Otherwise, the greens in the superfood powder will mostly be wasted, which is a shame.

5. Superfoods Per Serving (SFPS)

Perhaps the most important thing to consider is the amount of superfoods you’re getting in every serving. Athletic Greens provides 10,000 milligrams worth of superfoods, whereas Amazing Grass only contains about 7,000 milligrams. So, the clear advantage when it comes to potency and superfood dosage is with Athletic Greens.

However, the real problem is that neither superfood supplement comes even close to our top ranked best greens powder when it comes to superfoods per serving. When you’re seeking for a high quality superfood supplement, the main thing you should be looking at is the potency and nutritional profile of the greens blend.

Within the greens blend, you should see an abundance of leafy greens, non GMO whole food ingredients, organic superfoods, fruits, vegetables, and more. Most importantly, the greens blend needs to be large enough…this is critical. In the case of BOTH of these greens powders, the greens blend is NOT large enough, which is why we ultimately do not recommend either one.

If you want a real nutrition boost, you need a real superfood drink, and I would NOT classify either one of these as a real superfood drink in the sense that they do not contain enough superfoods to provide that nutrition boost and subsequent health benefits you’re looking for.

6. Protein

Protein is important because a lot of people like to use superfood supplements as meal replacements to help them with weight loss, and protein is key when it comes to helping you feel full. Without a significant amount of protein, you aren’t going to feel very full after consuming the drink, which means the supplement is not going to be able to help out with weight loss.

Bad news…both Athletic Greens and Amazing Grass only contain 2 grams of protein per serving, which is nowhere near enough. To make a real difference both in terms of meal replacement and weight loss, you really need about 10 grams or more. Our top ranked superfood powder contains 11 grams of 100% vegan pea protein in every serving, which means it does an excellent job at making you feel full…I drink it in place of breakfast every day!

Think about the benefits of getting all of that extra protein…we’re talking weight management, meal replacement, lean muscle mass growth, and so much more. Protein (specifically vegan plant based protein) can be a huge help when it comes to all of the aforementioned goals, which is why it’s a real shame that neither one of these superfood supplements contains it…but our top recommended green powder contains it, and a whole lot of it at that!

Amazing Grass vs Athletic Greens Ingredients comparison

Now that we have compared the general aspects of the formulas, let’s take a deeper dive into exactly what these supplements contain. In this section, we’re going to examine the key ingredients in both supplements and take a look at the difference between the two formulas.

Common Ingredients

Spirulina is widely accepted in the industry as the most potent superfood on the market. Any green drink that does not contain Spirulina is not worth the money. It’s very high in antioxidants and polyphenols, which can lead to benefits with regard to digestion, immunity, and cholesterol.

Neither Athletic Greens nor Amazing Grass discloses their dosages for this ingredient since both supplements utilize proprietary blends. This means we can see the ingredient is in there, but we can’t see the dosage size of the ingredient, which is a problem. We would much rather see transparent dosing.

For example, our top recommended superfood powder contains Spirulina at a dosage of 2,000 milligrams…that’s a big dosage! not only that, but now I know exactly what I’m getting, which is much better than getting an undisclosed dosage. The makers of the product are also well aware of how important this nutrient is because they put right on the front of the label “contains 2,000 milligrams of Spirulina!” Love to see it.

Chlorella is another one of the most highly regarded superfoods in existence due to the benefits it can produce with regard to digestion, immunity, detoxification, and more. This is another absolutely crucial ingredient that every green drink should include due to its naturally high vitamin and mineral content, naturally occurring antioxidants blend, and amino acids profile.

Antioxidants are crucial with regard to weight loss benefits, stress management, and detoxification. If you’re serious about making a change in your life, which clearly you are since you were smart enough to seek out a good superfood supplement, you need to make sure you’re getting enough Chlorlella. This stuff is a crucial ingredient and should be included in every green drink formula.

However, again we don’t know if either of these supplements includes enough of the ingredient because the dosage sizes are hidden within proprietary blends. This is a recurring issue with both supplements and one major reason we don’t recommend either one.

Wheat Grass

Wheat Grass is so powerful that it has become a trend for smoothie shops and coffee shops to sell “shots” of it. It produces a wide array of health benefits for your immune system, digestive health, gut health, cognitive function, and energy levels. The list of health benefits it can produce is incredibly long, which is why this nutrient is an absolute necessity in EVERY superfood powder formula.

Both of these superfood powders contain wheat grass, but can you guess what I’m going to say next? The dosages are undisclosed, so we don’t know if they contain a sufficient amount of the ingredient or not. This is a recurring issue with both of these greens supplements, which is ultimately the reason why we do not recommend either one.

Barley Grass

Barley Grass can produce an amazing array of health benefits due to the high level of amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals it naturally contains. The naturally occurring vitamin and mineral content in cereal grasses like this one is absolutely off the charts, which is why this ingredient is so commonly used in superfood drinks. You can even take Barley Grass shots at your local Jamba Juice…they don’t taste good, but man are they healthy!

Cereal grasses in general are one the best things you can consume for your overall health. Grasses and algae both taste very very bad, but they are some of the most nutritious substances on earth. Nobody wants to eat them because of the taste, and that’s fair…but I’m telling you…if you make your green drink the right way, you can’t taste the grasses at all. I have my green drink recipe nailed down so well, that I can’t taste any of the greens whatsoever.

Ingredients exclusive to Athletic Greens

Ginger is most well known for its healing and detoxifying benefits. Some studies suggest ginger may boost your immune system, which is why a lot of people drink ginger tea when they are sick. It’s also believed to help improve digestive function. Due tot he fact that it is rich in antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals, suffice it to say, it can produce a wide array of health benefits.

Athletic Greens contains an undisclosed amount of ginger, while Amazing Grass does not include this ingredient in any capacity. So, obviously AG has the advantage here, but again we are running into the issue of the dosage not being disclosed. Transparency is important in the supplement industry. If you want the health benefits a supplement has to offer, you need the dosages to be significant.

Bilberry Fruit

Bilberry naturally contains a very high amount of antioxidants and is most well known for its ability to help reduce inflammation. Bilberry fruit is often overlooked and one of the more underrated superfoods, so it’s no surprise that it’s not part of both formulas.

However, we again don’t know the dosage Athletic Greens uses. This is unfortunate because you really can’t know if the ingredients is going to produce health benefits or not if you don’t know the dosage. With that said, clinical studies have shown that this nutrient can positively effect your immune system and liver health, which is great.

Ingredients exclusive to Amazing Grass

Flax Seed

Flax seed is very high in many crucial nutrients including fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and lignans. This combination of nutrients can help improve digestion, reduce appetite, and improve cholesterol. This ingredient is the cornerstone of the fiber blend portion of this formula.

Amazing Grass does not disclose the amount of flax seed it contains, but at least this powerful ingredient is in the formula. In terms of specific superfoods, this may be the biggest advantage it has over Athletic Greens. A powerful fiber blend goes a long way when it comes to improving your digestive health and improving your gut microbiome.

Maca Root

Maca root is rich in many vitamins and minerals including iron and iodine, which makes it a very solid addition to a green drink formula. While it’s not widely considered to be a superfood, it’s definitely capable of producing some benefits including improving hormone levels, energy levels, and helping the user with stress management via cortisol reduction.

Stress management is one of those health benefits that just naturally comes when you pick out a truly high quality greens supplement because the nutrients work together so well to ensure your gut and brain are communicating effectively, which is crucial when it comes to reducing stress levels.

Did you know 90% of your serotonin is stored in your gut? That means if your gut isn’t communicating with your brain properly, you won’t be getting enough serotonin. That’s the thing about superfood supplements. They produce so many health benefits in so many areas of your body, that the ultimate result is true synergy. Your body, mind, and stomach are much better able to communicate within itself and function more effectively as a whole.

Lastly, not to be too repetitive, but again, we do not know the dosage of Maca because the company left it undisclosed. This is the key down side to the use of proprietary blends.

Which is better, Amazing Grass or Athletic Greens? Our conclusion

All things considered, Athletic Greens is the better supplement overall. It contains more superfoods per serving, more probiotics, and just overall offers more nutritional value. The problem is that it’s very overpriced.

It’s also worth noting that Athletic Greens is very weak when it comes to digestive enzymes as we talked about before, so if digestive enzymes are important to you, Amazing Grass might be the better pick.

At the end of the day, we really do NOT recommend either one due to s severe lack of potency, weak superfood profiles, and the absence of key ingredients. Neither of them are potent enough, and even the more potent one (Athletic Greens) simply does not offer enough value.
