Before I get into my breakdown of Athletic Greens, I’d like to first emphasize a very important point. I don’t mean to bash the rest of the green drinks, but I do feel that it’s very important for me to emphasize how much of a quality gap there is between the #1 top ranked (Total Living Drink Greens) and everything else. Nutritionally speaking, the TLD just blows every other product out of the water.

Anyways, let’s talk about Athletic Greens. It uses fermented, organic grasses such as Wheat Grass, Barley Grass, Oat Grass, organic coconut milk powder, and other well-known organic green superfood ingredients, which is great, but the product is less potent than other types of superfoods in terms of the total amount of nutrients in every serving. This is a pretty good greens blend, and the product is affordable.

However, we must again come back to the supplement facts and the value. The most important consideration is how many superfoods you are getting in every serving, and this number is far too low at only 5,200 milligrams. That is one third of the amount you would get with our top greens powder, which is a major issue. It’s not enough to just provide high quality nutrient dense natural herbs…they must also be dosed properly, or there really is no point to consuming them.

Natures Plus Super Greens is in all honesty a pretty average greens powder, and when it comes to green superfood ingredients, it’s actually below average at only 5,200 milligrams of superfoods. However, it does contain great ingredients for people who are on the keto diet. Many keto dieters enjoy greens powders because most of them are consumable even for people on diets since they are so healthy.

While there are some excellent ingredients in here that may benefit people on the keto diet, this is overall not one of the best greens powders on the market due to its lack of potency. It is also lacking in the vitamins and minerals department, and it’s a bit low in terms of the sheer amount of nutrient dense natural herbs in particular. It just isn’t anywhere near as nutritious as the top ranked options on this list.

Patriot Power Greens is a high-quality organic superfood green drink powder made by Patriot Health Alliance. With an emphasis on alkalizing superfoods that also help reduce inflammation in the body, this formula is less potent than many others, but also costs less. It also contains probiotics and digestive enzymes and tastes pretty decent for a green drink. It is missing one key ingredient that many greens powders use in order to provide electrolytes, and that’s organic coconut milk powder.

This is nowhere near being one of the most nutritious or potent greens powders on the market, but for the money, it’s not bad. You certainly won’t see the Patriot Power Greens powder moving any higher up on this list unless they significantly increase the amount of green superfood ingredients and veggies, which is currently only at 2,500 milligrams…that’s an incredibly low dosage for a super greens powder when compared to the others on this list.

That’s a pretty solid amount. Add in to the equation the fact that Spruce Greens also contains probiotics and digestive enzymes, and you’ve got yourself a pretty decent super greens powder. The nutrition panel is not too shabby.

However, there is a reason it’s not in our top 5 and is instead at the very bottom of this list. For the sake of simplicity, let’s compare it to our top ranked greens powder, which has 15,000 milligrams of superfoods. It’s really that simple…the top ranked option (Total Living Drink) is 3 times as potent as Spruce Greens. Not only that, but they cost the exact same price. Therefore, the choice is truly a no brainer. This supplement very clearly belongs at the bottom of our list of the best greens powder supplements.

However, if I’m being completely honest, I have no idea why that is the case. In my review of the Nested Naturals Super Greens powder, which you can see if you click the link below, I explain in depth why this greens powder is truly nothing to write home about. It comes in at about 8,000 milligrams worth of super greens per serving. Again, the number one ranked best greens powder on this list contains 15,000 MG of super greens…so, why is this one even worth including on the list?

Yes, our top ranked greens supplement is literally twice as potent as the Nested Naturals Super Greens powder. However, when a supplement gets this popular, I feel that it’s almost a necessity to include it on the list just to make sure people know where I stand on it as a Certified Nutrition Coach. In conclusion, TOTAL LIVING DRINK is far and away the best greens powder on the market. To be honest, it’s really not even close. When it comes to green drink powders, the superfood blend is the most important part of the formula, and Total Living Drink Greens provides by far the most superfoods in every serving at 15,000 milligrams.

But let’s not stop there…looking even beyond the superfood blend, Total Living Drink Greens also contains the most probiotics per serving, the most digestive enzymes, and the most antioxidants. It also is the only superfood powder on this list that contains vegan protein powder in the formula, which is a great bonus. Lastly, it may be hard to think that a supplement this nutritious can possibly taste good, but the makers of this product (Kylea Health & Energy) have been around for 30 years. They’ve spent a lot of time finding a way to make their greens powder taste good without sacrificing the organic nature of the formula. The natural blueberry flavoring they added perfectly masks the taste of the greens and makes it taste really great.

Plus, for people who don’t like the taste of green drinks, they offer another version of their product called Total Living Drink Berry. It’s essentially the exact same product in terms of nutrition and superfoods per serving, but it has higher dosages of berry ingredients, which makes it taste delicious, especially when the powder is mixed in as part of a smoothie.

One of my favorite supplement blogs is called Barbend. I often read their content, and I actually factor their opinions into my reviews. While I do love Barbend, one site I would recommend avoiding is VeryWell Fit. I don’t necessarily have anything against VeryWell Fit, but I have read their bet greens powder article, and I didn’t agree with any of their recommendations. It just seemed to me that at least when it comes to greens powders, VeryWell Fit doesn’t quite know their stuff as well as I do (or as well as Barbend does for that matter).

It is also a well researched fact that increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables can reduce bloating, and that’s exactly what you’re doing with a greens supplement. However, you should always direct these types of questions to your primary health care provider before taking a supplement.

Are powdered greens as good as fresh?

Yes, powdered greens are as good as fresh leafy greens. Powdered greens are actually BETTER than fresh leafy greens in several ways, believe it or not. The reason powdered greens are better is that they have actually already been juiced and then converted into powder form. Juiced greens are better than regular un-juiced fresh greens, and therefore, powdered greens are ideal…plus, you do NOT lose any grams of fiber or other valuable nutrients during the powdering process. You just have to make sure you thoroughly examine the ingredient list. However, you should always direct these questions to your primary health care provider before taking any supplement.

What should I look for in a greens powder?

The first thing you should look for is a highly potent and nutritious superfood blend on the supplement label, also known as the ingredient label. How many superfoods are in the formula? What is the overall potency of the greens blend? You should also make sure your greens powder contains digestive enzymes and probiotics. Green tea extract is a also healthy addition. Also, make sure it is non gmo, made in the United States, third party tested, has no added sugars or artificial sweeteners and has high fiber content.

Third party testing is crucial because it proves that the formula is exactly what the company says it is. In other words, third party testing verifies every last ingredient and the dosage to ensure the company isn’t making false claims. I strictly recommend supplements that have undergone third party testing to my clients.

It also helps if the green powder is USDA certified organic. It is very hard to find one that is USDA certified organic, so I wouldn’t say this is an absolute necessity by any means…its just a bonus. Supplement companies have a very hard time getting the USDA certified organic stamp, and it’s not because the products are bad…it’s just because the FDA is very strict when it comes to qualifying something as USDA certified organic.

One more thing you should like into is whether or not the company selling it offers a money back guarantee. Most reputable supplement companies will offer you a money back guarantee should you decide you do not like the product. If you are buying a quality supplement, you hopefully won’t have to worry about using the money back guarantee, but it’s nice to know you have the option to return it and get your money back.

Lastly, it never hurts to have a registered dietician or a doctor take a look at the supplement before trying it. Or at the very least, have your doctor or primary health care provider take a look before you start taking it. Remember, these are just the best greens powder supplements on the market in my opinion as a Certified Nutrition Coach…your primary health care provider always knows best!
