One of many reasons Rule One Gain (R1 Gain) is ranked highly is because it is a new approach to mass gainers that no other company has taken before. Most companies just try to pack whatever they can into it to cause you to gain as much weight as possible in order to give the appearance of results. R1 Gain aims to allow you to gain strictly lean muscle without any of the unwanted fat.
Read our Rule One Gain review and find out how it can likely do exactly that, or learn about a mass gainer we like even better here: Top Mass Gainers.
Rule One Gain is made by Rule One Proteins, which was founded by the same guys who started Optimum Nutrition. As you know, ON is one of the largest and most-well respected sports nutrition manufacturers on the planet. Their Whey Gold Standard is nothing short of legendary. So, you know you can trust the quality of their newest venture’s products.
The products of both of these companies generally carry cleaner profiles than the rest of the competitors. This article is going to explain which of the two best mass gainers in existence is better and why…Rule One Gain, or Optimum Nutrition Pro Gainer?
Rule One Gain Ingredients & Nutritional Facts
There are a lot of protein powders out there today that are designed for people who are trying to pack on muscle mass. The problem with most of these products is that most companies put so many unnecessary ingredients in them to give it the appearance of a product that will cause you to gain weight. You might be wondering, what’s wrong with that? Why wouldn’t I just look for the mass gainer that will cause me to gain the most weight?
Because almost ALL of these products can cause you to gain FAT as well as muscle. You will be gaining weight, yes…but it likely won’t be the lean muscle mass you are hoping for. Most products can cause you to gain muscle mass, but in addition to the muscle mass, you can also gain excess stomach fat and “love handles.”
Rule One Gain is in our opinion the best product specifically for gaining LEAN muscle mass. When you take this product, you will not gain any excess fat that other products can cause you to gain. Why is that? Well, it all comes down to what goes into the product. Lets go over some of the nutrition facts.
First, we will go over the carbohydrate to protein ratio; the most important thing to consider when searching for a protein powder that will allow you to gain lean muscle mass. R1 Gain contains 75 grams of carbohydrates per serving and 50 grams of protein per serving, which makes for a PERFECT proportion of carbohydrates to protein for those looking to gain lean muscle mass. The carbohydrates to protein ratio is 1.5 to 1.
If you look at Pro Gainer by Optimum Nutrition, you will see it contains 85 grams of carbohydrates per serving and 60 grams of protein. The carbohydrates to protein ratio in ON’s Pro Gainer is about 1.4 to 1. This is very good, but as I said before, 1.5 to 1 is ideally what you want to see, so R1 Gain has Pro Gainer just barely beat in terms of the carb to protein ratio.
Another reason R1 Gain can allow you to gain only lean muscle mass without gaining any fat is the quality of the protein itself. This is something that often goes overlooked because people don’t know the difference between a quality whey protein and a cheap whey protein.
The protein blend used in R1 Gain is almost entirely Whey Protein Isolate, which is the purest form of protein in existence. ON’s Pro Gainer consists of Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Calcium Caseinate, Egg Albumen, Hydrolyzed Whey Peptides, and Glutamine Peptides. That formula is extremely unpure. I would say that Pro Gainer’s poor protein blend is probably the primary reason why R1 Gain is better than Pro Gainer.
People don’t understand how important it is that quality whey protein is used. With a protein blend like Pro Gainer’s, you might not see very good results. The protein blend and the results you could see are directly correlated. The cleaner the protein blend is, the leaner the muscle can be and the less fat you can gain. A clean formula = A lean formula. That is why R1 Gain is so much better than any other gainer I have come across.
More Nutrition Facts
Now lets look at some other nutrition facts. In addition to its perfect carb to protein ratio and extremely pure protein blend, Rule One Gain contains only 550 calories per serving, which is 100 calories less than ON Pro Gainer (650 per serving). The body can only utilize an absolute maximum of 50 grams of protein at one time, so that is how many grams R1 Gain contains. You will find this to be pretty standard across the board, however, ON Pro Gainer contains 60 grams per serving, which is a little excessive.
What does not go into the product is equally as important as what does go into the product, so let me explain what R1 Gain does NOT contain that makes it such a clean formula.
There are only 5 grams of fat in every serving, and that is the lowest I have ever seen in a mass gainer. ON Pro Gainer contains 8 grams of fat, which is very solid but still slightly higher than R1 Gain. R1 Gain also only contains 3 grams of sugar per serving, which is just a couple grams under Pro Gainer’s 5 grams per serving.
R1 Gain has only 270 milligrams of sodium per serving, while Pro Gainer has 360 milligrams per serving. That extra 90 milligrams can really add up over time and potentially cause you to gain fat. The nutrition labels contain only absolute facts, and as you can see, R1 Gain has ON Pro Gainer beat every step of the way.
If you continue to read reviews on this site, you will find that Optimum Nutrition’s products and Rule One protein powders are both generally ranked very high. One of the main reasons for that is because of how pure their protein is. Like I said before, R1 Gain uses Whey Protein Isolate along with 100% Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolate, and those are the purest forms of protein in existence. The purer the protein blend, the more effective the product.
The protein blend and the lean carbohydrate blend, along with added BCAAs and L-Glutamine, make for an excellent formula for gaining lean muscle mass without gaining any unwanted fat. BCAAs and glutamine are both absolute necessities in order to help ensure maximum recovery and muscle growth.
A mass gainer that does not contain BCAAs and glutamine is nearly useless as far as I’m concerned. You need to make sure that your mass gainer contains BCAAs and glutamine, and if it doesn’t, consider buying a new one (this goes for standard protein powders as well).
For those of you who are unaware, sodium is a huge factor in making a product taste good. More sodium tends to create better taste, however sodium is not good for you and is a large contributor to the gaining of fat.
R1 Gain contains only 270 mg of sodium per serving, which is astonishingly low for a mass gainer. With that said, this product still tastes fantastic. You would be surprised how sweet it tastes while barely having any sodium. Other obvious factors that contribute to taste are sugar and fat, but obviously you want to avoid taking excess sugar and fat (remember, R1 Gain contains only 3 grams of sugar and 5 grams of fat).
Most companies will add a ton of sugar, fat, and sodium to make the product taste good…but guess what? That can make you gain fat, not muscle. Rule One manages to put very small amounts of fat, sugar, and sodium in this product, but there is just enough in there to make it taste great. I personally take and recommend the chocolate flavor.
